Founded in 1954, Mental Health America of Central Virginia, formerly the Mental Health Association of Central Virginia, (MHACV) is the oldest, continuously operating non-profit (501c3) organizations in Lynchburg. Our service area includes the cities of Bedford and Lynchburg, the counties of Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford, and Campbell. We are affiliated with Mental Health America at both the state and national level, and are one of 240 affiliates nationwide, who collectively work toward the common goal of helping others. MHACV has a small, dedicated staff, and a hard working, volunteer board of directors.
At Mental Health America of Central Virginia we are proactive in our education, support, prevention, and mental health promotion efforts. Therefore, our programming is continually evaluated to allow us to respond to the most urgent community needs and to be stewards of the funds our supporters provide.
We work to promote positive change by educating the public about mental illnesses and reducing barriers that exist between treatments and services, and the individuals who need them. Our goal is create connections and provide resources to those we serve, especially the 54 million individuals who live with mental disorders. Through advocacy, education, research and dedicated service, we have been able to help many Americans with mental disorders receive care and enjoy fulfilling, productive lives.
