Mental Health America of Central Virginia strives to increase awareness of mental illness, decrease the occurrence of mental illness, and promote positive mental health. We are proactive as well as responsive in our education, support, prevention, and promotion efforts. Our commitment to responding to the changing needs of our community requires us to be actively involved in community affairs that effect mental health. Involvement at this level requires a competent, flexible, and willing approach to service delivery. The following review of programs and services reflects a scope and diversity that is consistent with this approach. Mental Health Screenings: MHACV provides year round, no cost screenings for depressive, anxiety, and eating disorders. The goals of this service are to raise awareness that mental illnesses are real, common, and treatable, and to ensure that those at-risk receive proper, timely, and effective treatment. Screenings and education programs offer various businesses, college campuses, public schools, health fairs, and physician’s offices a cost effective, confidential, and non-threatening pre-assessment to determine if further evaluation is advisable. Self-screening tests are available on our website as well: Click here. Mental Health Resource Library: MHACV maintains a lending library of books, videos, brochures, fact sheets and pamphlets related to mental health topics. It is open to the public. Thousands of pieces of literature are distributed to the community throughout the year. Click here for on-line listings. Public Education: In addition to programs directly related to mental illnesses, the MHACV staff present workshops and seminars on stress management, healthy relationships, stigma, body image, and many other mental health topics of interest to groups requesting them.
