Substance Abuse Glossary Addiction: Physical or psychological dependence on a substance, usually characterized by use of increased amounts. Chemical Dependency: The continued use of alcohol or drugs which causes disturbance in important areas of functioning where use continues despite adverse consequences. Co-Dependency: A set of adaptive behaviors reflecting the individual’s absorption with meeting the needs of others to the exclusion of his/her own needs; a common reaction to the chemical dependence of a family member. Detoxification: The process of withdrawal from alcohol or other drugs, usually characterized by symptoms such as shaking, sweating and anxiety. Dual Diagnosis: Describes a person with a chemical dependency co-existing with a psychiatric illness. 12-Step Program: A system of anonymous support group meetings designed to assist people to recover from various addiction, (i.e. Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, Overeaters Anonymous). |
